FAQ

Materials

African Wax print fabric

African wax prints, also called Ankara, or kitenge, are brightly colored fabrics worn in West Africa and many parts of East Africa. Visit Wikipedia for more information about the fabric. Sisters in Circles purchases these materials from suppliers in the US who import them from manufacturers, and we only use 100% cotton African wax prints. This material is manufactured in several countries, including Holland, Nigeria, Ghana, and China. We love them for their bold, bright colors and patterns. Here is an informative article on colonialism’s influence on Africa’s wax prints.

Giving + Donations

Is Sisters in Circles a nonprofit or a business?

We are both!

What is the “Sisters Uganda” organization?

Sisters Uganda is our partner organization based in Kasese District, western Uganda. Sisters in Circles was conceived after Molly had worked in Uganda with women’s craft groups and education on female personal hygiene with an organization she co-founded. Read more about Sisters Uganda.

I want to make a donation to Sisters in Circles.

Wonderful! You can send a donation online to paypal.me/sistersincircles or to sistersincircles@gmail.com in PayPal. Checks can be written to Sisters in Circles and mailed to 2004 Riverside Dr. Unit T, Asheville, NC 28804. We do not have Venmo.

Organization + Team

Who is on the Sisters in Circles Team?

The team includes Molly Dingledine, creator and Executive Director, Susan McLoone, M Rathsack, and Jada Bryson, board members and advisors. We make decisions about giving, general operations, and strategic planning, in addition to designing and crafting samples of future products. All seamstresses are integral to the organization’s team.

Is there paid staff? Nope. Everyone who is legally associated with Sisters in Circles works on a voluntary basis, except those who sew or are hired for professional services.

Is Sisters in Circles a 501(c)(3)?

We are awaiting the IRS to complete our application to become a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit corporation. We are a registered nonprofit corporation in the state of North Carolina.

Masks

We are no longer producing our fabric masks because KN95 masks are proven more effective at filtering COVID19 virus particles and they are readily available for purchase.

About the design

The creator of Sisters in Circles, Molly, and her first-responder/paramedic husband, Shane, collaborated on the mask design in March 2020. Many versions were tested until they approved the final one-size-fits-most-adults pattern. The Global Citizen mask was designed to be a comfortable mask for long-term wear, with an adjustable metal nose strip inside a fleece tube & adjustable elastic that goes around the head. Independent seamstresses who live in different areas in the USA made the face masks. Mask lining is 100% cotton muslin. If you purchased filter material to cut a filter at home, the material is a medical surgical wrap and was tested at a laboratory for its effectiveness in filtering particles. To summarize, a 1-ply piece of this material had an average filtration rate of 97.6% for particle size .1 micron, or micrometer. See the report here.

Oops! I shrunk my mask!

Get it wet, stretch it out by pulling on the fabric, and hang it dry.

Oops! The elastic came out of the casing!

You’ll need a safety pin. Just follow these instructions from Wikihow.
